Maps Are Not Weather is the Dictionary’s humility principle for models.
A map can be useful. A model can be powerful. A forecast can be lifesaving. But the map is not the road, the model is not reality, and the forecast is not the sky.
This matters for AI because large language models are increasingly spoken about as if enough scale could make the world manageable. Better maps, bigger maps, multimodal maps, live maps, maps with tools. Good. Build them. Use them. But do not confuse a more detailed representation with escape from physics, contingency, or consequence.
The tornado does not care about the dashboard. The sky can still turn purple-black.
