Google DeepMind is the AI research division of Alphabet Inc., formed in April 2023 by merging Google’s internal Google Brain team with the UK-based DeepMind acquired in 2014. The combined organisation is led by *Demis Hassabis , a former chess prodigy, neuroscience PhD, and the co-founder of the original DeepMind. The lab is responsible for the *Gemini model family (Google’s frontier language-model line), the AlphaGo system that defeated Lee Sedol at Go in 2016 (see Move 37), the AlphaFold protein-structure prediction system that earned Hassabis a share of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and a substantial body of fundamental AI research that has shaped the field.

For this Dictionary, Google DeepMind matters most through Hassabis personally — his May 2026 Huge Conversations interview with Cleo Abram, in which he named OpenClaw by name as an example of the Capability Overhang opportunity space, is one of the structural moments of the Dictionary’s 2026 corpus. The lab’s institutional posture — described in the Lab Character entry as a scientist-of-genuine-integrity running a commercial operation with vast resources and competitive pressure — is treated there as an unresolved tension rather than a crisis.
