Google DeepMind Glossary

AI research division of Alphabet, formed in 2023 by merging Google Brain with the original DeepMind. Makers of the Gemini model family and AlphaGo. Led by Demis Hassabis.

Google DeepMind is Alphabet’s principal AI research organisation, formed in April 2023 by combining Google Brain with DeepMind, the UK company Google acquired in 2014. It is led by Demis Hassabis, a co-founder of the original DeepMind. Its work includes the Gemini model family, AlphaGo, which defeated Lee Sedol in 2016 (see Move 37), and AlphaFold. Hassabis and John Jumper shared half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for protein-structure prediction.

For this Dictionary, Google DeepMind matters both as a scientific institution and as a commercial competitor. Hassabis’s 2026 interview with Cleo Abram emphasised scientific discovery while acknowledging the competitive pressure created by the public chatbot race. The Lab Character entry treats that combination—scientific ambition, vast resources, and commercial pressure—as a tension to examine rather than a verdict on the people involved.
