*Google DeepMind*'s family of large language models, launched December 2023 as the successor to PaLM 2. The integrated frontier model behind Google's consumer AI and the Vertex AI enterprise platform.

Gemini is the family name for the large language models produced by Google DeepMind. The family was launched in December 2023 as the successor to Google’s earlier PaLM 2 line, with three initial tiers: Gemini Ultra (most-capable), Gemini Pro (balanced), and Gemini Nano (on-device). Subsequent generations have included Gemini 1.5, Gemini 2.0, Gemini 2.5, and Gemini 3 (April 2026), with each generation expanding context window length (Gemini 1.5 famously introduced the million-token context window) and improving multimodal capability.

For this Dictionary, Gemini matters at three levels. First, as a peer frontier-model line — the GPT / Claude / Gemini triangle is the closed-weights frontier market readers will recognise. Second, as the proprietary sibling of the open-weights Gemma line that the operator runs locally on the M5 Max. Third, as the underlying model behind Google’s broader AI integration into Search, Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets), and Vertex AI enterprise services — making Gemini the model most consumers have used without necessarily knowing it.

The Dictionary’s daily working model is Claude Opus rather than Gemini, but Gemini is the structural alternative most often considered when Opus Addict-flavoured dependency questions arise.
