Demis Hassabis Glossary

Google DeepMind CEO and one of the central figures in modern AI; the Dictionary uses him as a source for AlphaGo, AlphaFold, capability overhang, and agentic-threshold language.

Demis Hassabis is the CEO of Google DeepMind and one of the central figures in modern AI: a bridge between games, neuroscience, reinforcement learning, scientific discovery, and frontier-model development.

For this Dictionary, Hassabis matters less as a celebrity figure than as a source of unusually clear public language. Move 37, Root Node Problems, Capability Overhang, The CERN Alternative, and Agentic Threshold all draw on his public explanations of how AI systems discover, scale, and eventually act.

He is also useful because his career keeps the scientific and commercial registers in tension. AlphaGo and AlphaFold belong to the scientific imagination. Gemini and DeepMind’s frontier work belong to the commercial and strategic AI race. The tension between those registers is one of the Dictionary’s recurring subjects.
