Zhipu AI / Z.ai

Zhipu AI (智谱) is the Beijing artificial-intelligence company behind the GLM model family; Z.ai is its international-facing brand.

The company emerged from research associated with Tsinghua University’s Knowledge Engineering Group and has become one of China’s most important model developers. Its GLM family spans language, coding, agentic, and multimodal systems, with both hosted services and open-weight releases.

For the Dictionary, Zhipu matters because it makes the Open-Weights Inversion concrete. In 2026, GLM-5.2 showed that security-relevant capability comparable to earlier U.S. frontier models could appear in a downloadable Chinese model. That changed the policy problem from controlling a few American APIs to governing a capability that could circulate at the weight level.

The names should not be collapsed carelessly. Zhipu AI is the company name used in China and in much of its history. Z.ai is the international brand. GLM is the model family.
