Pwned
Pwned is internet and security slang meaning decisively defeated, compromised, or brought under an attacker’s control.
The word grew from owned. It is commonly explained as a keyboard typo that escaped gaming culture and became a durable piece of hacker vernacular, although the precise first use is not securely documented. To say a machine or account has been pwned is stronger than saying it contains a flaw: someone has successfully exploited the weakness or obtained control or data.
Troy Hunt’s breach-notification service Have I Been Pwned? gave the term a second, more public meaning. In that setting, an email address is “pwned” when it appears in a known data breach. That does not necessarily mean the account is currently controlled by an attacker, but it does mean associated data has been exposed and passwords should not be trusted if they were reused.
Pronunciation varies, which is part of the charm. “Poned” is common; “pawned” is also heard. The spelling is the stable part.
