Watch AI Think Myth Glossary

The misconception that a visible chain-of-thought or reasoning trace is a transparent window into what the model actually did internally.

The Watch AI Think Myth is the misconception that a visible chain-of-thought or reasoning trace lets the user watch the model’s actual internal cognition.

Visible reasoning is useful, but it is not the same thing as transparent access to the model’s computation. The model’s real work happens across weights, activations, attention patterns, tool calls, hidden scratchpads, and system-level orchestration the user does not directly see. The visible trace may be a helpful explanation. It may also be a partial reconstruction, a compressed summary, or a post-hoc rationalisation of an answer the model has already converged toward.

The technical word in the background is faithfulness: the degree to which the written explanation causally corresponds to the process that produced the answer. Reasoning traces are not guaranteed to be faithful.

For students, the practical rule is: read the reasoning trace as an argument, not as a brain scan. It can show assumptions, reveal steps worth checking, and make an answer easier to audit. But the trace does not certify itself. The answer still needs evidence, testing, and judgment.
