Originality.ai Glossary
Originality.ai is an AI-detection and plagiarism-checking tool launched in 2022 by founder Jonathan Gillham. The product combines a traditional plagiarism check (comparing submitted text against a large web corpus for unoriginal copy) with an AI-detection classifier (claiming to identify AI-generated text). The company’s primary market is content marketing and SEO — agencies and publishers who want to verify that contracted writers are producing human work — with secondary markets in academic-integrity and editorial review.
For this Dictionary, Originality.ai is one of the named players in the AI-detection economy critiqued in The Olang’ Trap and The Sinceerly Stack. The Dictionary’s editorial position is the same as for Pangram Labs and GPTZero: the detection reflex carries systematic bias against certain native human registers, and operators should not act on detection scores in isolation regardless of which vendor produced them.
Originality.ai is mentioned by Koebler in passing in Your AI Use Is Breaking My Brain and is named in several academic-integrity context discussions as a tool faculty and journals are increasingly being asked to use.
