Mistral Glossary

A Paris-based AI company that develops both downloadable open-weight models and hosted commercial systems.

Mistral AI is a Paris-based AI company founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, all previously researchers at Google DeepMind or Meta. It develops a mixture of downloadable open-weight models, hosted commercial models, and products such as Le Chat.

The distinction among those offerings matters. Mistral has released important models under permissive licences, including Mistral 7B, Mixtral 8x7B, and the Mistral 3 family. Other systems and services have been distributed under different or commercial terms. “Mistral is open source” is therefore too broad; licences must be checked model by model.

For this Dictionary, Mistral matters for two reasons. Technically, Mixtral helped make sparse Mixture of Experts models accessible to local operators. Strategically, the company gives the European sovereignty debate a concrete institution: a European lab offering models that can, in some cases, be downloaded and deployed without routing every request through a US-hosted API. That is an option, not complete sovereignty; hardware, training data, cloud infrastructure, licences, and support still have their own dependencies.
