An agentic-AI company whose contested Meta acquisition showed that the work layer had become strategic technology.

Manus is an agentic-AI company founded by a Chinese team and later based in Singapore. Its product is designed to carry out multi-step work—planning, browsing, handling files, and producing finished artefacts—rather than merely answer a prompt.

Its corporate history became as revealing as its product. Manus announced that it would join Meta, but Chinese authorities blocked the acquisition in April 2026. On September 1, Manus said it had resumed independent operations. The episode made the Dictionary’s strategic point unusually visible: governments may classify an agent company as infrastructure that turns model capability into autonomous work.

Manus therefore belongs near Commercial Legibility and Implementation Layer War. Competition now includes the layer that can organise models, tools, permissions, memory, and recovery into useful work.
