Mac Studio Glossary
The Mac Studio is Apple’s compact-desktop Apple Silicon workstation, first introduced in March 2022. As of 2026 the line ships in M4 Max and M3 Ultra configurations, with the M5 generation Studio expected in the year’s hardware refresh cycle (rumoured but not officially announced as of May 2026 — see MEMORY.md notes on the Apr 2026 Sixfold Skyreading / Apple convergence event).
For this Dictionary, the Mac Studio is the candidate hardware for the Sally experiment. The plan, captured in the Pending review queue and in research/sovereign-assistant/SALLY.md, is to run a dedicated second instance of the operator’s agentic system on a Mac Studio with a fully local open-weights stack — alongside the primary M5 Max instance which retains the borrowed-brain (frontier closed-tier API) connection. The Mac Studio’s desktop form factor, higher sustained thermal envelope, and larger memory ceiling (up to 192 GB on the Ultra) make it a structurally better fit for sustained-inference local-model work than the laptop-class M5 Max, even though the M5 Max remains capable.
The Studio is treated in the Sovereign Compute calculator as the canonical Level-4-sovereignty hardware target for individual operators in 2026.
