The Fully Autonomous Agent Myth is the belief that present-day AI agents can reliably run long end-to-end workflows without human checkpoints, scoped authority, or verification.

Agents are real. They can plan, call tools, observe results, update state, and continue across multiple steps. The myth is not that agents exist. The myth is that a chain of individually competent actions automatically becomes a reliable autonomous process.

The failure mode is compounding error. If an agent is 95 percent reliable on one step, that sounds strong. But a twenty-step workflow made of 95-percent-reliable steps is far less reliable end to end. The agent may choose the wrong tool once, misread one result, overwrite one assumption, drift from the goal, or get stuck in a loop. Each small error becomes input to the next action.

The current practical answer is not “no agents.” It is bounded autonomy: short runs, clear scopes, logs, checkpoints, verifier models where useful, and humans in the loop before consequential action. The goal is to let agents do useful work without pretending that autonomy removes ownership.

For students, the lesson is managerial. The interesting question is not whether the agent can act. It is who owns the workflow, where the checkpoints sit, what evidence counts as success, and what authority the agent has before a human reviews the result.
