Context Window Database Myth Glossary
The Context Window Database Myth is the misconception that a very large context window can be treated like a reliable database: dump in the documents, dump in the codebase, and let the model query whatever it needs.
Large context windows are genuinely useful. They let a model work across long documents, larger code files, extended conversations, and richer project state than earlier systems could manage. On single-needle retrieval tasks, frontier models can perform impressively. If one fact is hidden in a long haystack, the model may find it.
Real work is harder. The model often has to connect many facts scattered across the window, weigh contradictions, preserve local details while reasoning globally, and notice which small passage changes the interpretation of another. Performance can degrade when the task becomes multi-needle rather than single-needle. A million-token window is not the same thing as a structured memory system.
For students, the practical rule is: context is visibility, not understanding. More context helps only when the important material is organised, salient, and checked. Retrieval, summaries, indexes, citations, and human framing still matter.
