Anthropic is an AI company founded in 2021 by Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and other former OpenAI staff. The company develops the Claude family of large language models (Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku) and developed the Constitutional AI training approach. It is headquartered in San Francisco; major investors include Amazon and Google.
For this Dictionary, Anthropic is an important frontier-model provider and the source of models used extensively in the operator’s earlier agentic work. The Opus Addict entry describes the capability gains and single-vendor dependence that accompanied that use. The Lab Character entry treats Anthropic as a worked example of an AI lab whose stated mission and commercial trajectory remain in tension.
