Agentic Operating Systems
An agentic operating system is an operating environment designed so AI agents can inspect, configure, and act across the computer as first-class participants rather than as applications confined to a chat window.
The term is still aspirational and slightly imprecise. In most current examples, the operating-system kernel has not become an agent. What has changed is the environment around it: open configuration, command-line access, agent harnesses, permissions, usage meters, scripts, and applications are assembled so that an agent can alter the working system and perform tasks across it. Omarchy is an early and unusually vivid example.
The promise is a computer that adapts to the work. A research mode might arrange documents, browser windows, notes, and agents differently from a coding or video-editing mode. Instead of learning every preference panel, the user states an intention and an agent translates it into configuration.
The danger is vibe coding applied to the operating environment itself. Generated changes can accumulate faster than the owner understands them. Dependencies drift; permissions expand; local fixes conflict with upstream updates; one agent repairs what another agent altered; and the personalized system becomes a snowflake that cannot be reproduced or safely maintained. At operating-system scope, poorly understood code is not merely an untidy application. It touches the place where files, identity, security, and every other application meet.
Whether agentic operating systems are the future therefore remains open. The decisive feature will not be infinite malleability. It will be governed malleability: versioned changes, clear diffs, snapshots, rollback, tests, permission boundaries, provenance, and a stable base that agents are not free to casually dissolve.
The trend is worth watching. But the mature form may look less like an agent endlessly rewriting the operating system and more like a durable operating system offering agents carefully designed surfaces through which to adapt it.
